Most Common PS4 Problems and How to Fix Them
Blue Light Flashes
ERROR: One of the best known and problematic mistakes, dubbed blue light of death in honor of the famous red light that affected Xbox 360. As the name implies, pressing the power button the blue light flashes for a few seconds, until the consoles and LED turn off, preventing any type of operation. Come on, PS4 does not turn on.
SOLUTION: The problem could be on the TV, and not on the console. If you have a modern television, try to update it to the latest firmware version. If it doesn’t work, connect the PS4 to another TV to ensure. Also check that the HDMI cable is correctly connected and that the connectors are not damaged (if possible, also try connecting the console with another HDMI cable).
Another possible solution for the blue light of death is to press and hold the PS4 power button for 7 seconds and release when you hear a double beep. In this way, you will enter the PS4 safe mode and you can select from a range of options: change the resolution, update, default settings, rebuild the database and initialize. If this does not work, disconnect the power adapter and check carefully for damage. Also, you should check that the internal hard drive of the console does not show any damage.
PS4 turns ON Alone
ERROR: As the name implies, PS4 turns on by itself and ejects any disc inside.
SOLUTION: For now, this is one of the most mysterious mistakes and whose solution is not entirely clear. Some users have managed to avoid the problem by carefully cleaning the power button and ejecting PS4 discs. As you know, both buttons are very sensitive to touch, and dirt could be the main cause of the problem. Another possible solution is to place the console in an upright position.
If this did not work, it could be due to a software problem, so you will have to start the safe mode and move with different options.
Red Light and Goes Out
ERROR: Very similar to the previous one (in fact, there are already those who know it as the red light of death): In the middle of a game or when turning on, the red/orange light flashes several times, accompanied by three beeps and the console is turned off.
SOLUTION: This problem is due to the overheating of PS4, and can occur especially in hot weather. The first thing you should do is make sure that the console is properly turned off to disconnect all cables. Let it rest for several minutes (if possible in a cool place) until it cools and reconnects it.
It is also highly recommended that PlayStation 4 be placed in an open area and that there are no objects that obstruct the fan outputs (rear and side). Try not to leave it on surfaces such as carpets and that it is not too close to walls or other objects, or else the fans could malfunction and, sooner or later, you will suffer this error.
PS4 Goes Off Alone
ERROR: A very common problem that has already affected a large number of users. At any time and without prior notice, PS4 turns itself off and sometimes it is not possible to turn it on again. On many occasions, this error ends up leading to one of the lights of death.
SOLUTION: In the vast majority of cases, this is usually due to an overheating problem. It is essential to carry out as soon as possible the exposed in the solution for the red light of death, or else we could encounter this problem. If you have had the console for a long time in a poorly ventilated place, check that there is no fluff on the fans (you can do it by blowing on them).
However, this error may not have to be related to overheating and may be due to very different reasons. To try to find the PS4 solution, it goes out by itself. We recommend that you try what is indicated in the different death lights. As the last step, access the secure mode and rebuild the database, reinstall the system software or completely format the console in case it is a software problem.
PS4 Ejects Disc
ERROR: PS4 ejects disc without pressing the button and remains “locked” in that state, preventing new discs from being inserted.
SOLUTION: Make sure the console is completely turned off and unplug all cables (power, HDMI and Ethernet). Wait a few seconds and with the console disconnected, press and hold the power button until the LED illuminates for just a second (yes, even if it is not plugged into an outlet). Once this is done, reconnect the PS4 and the problem should have been resolved.
ERROR: At any time, PS4 crashes and we are forced to “pull the plug” to continue playing. It is not a common mistake, but a very annoying one.
SOLUTION: First and foremost do not pull the plug! Doing so could cause irreparable damage to the console. Instead, press and hold the power button until it turns off (you will hear several beeps). When turned on, PlayStation 4 will automatically enter safe mode and perform a system status check to make sure there are no serious errors. If it does not find faults, the console will start normally, although you will see a warning that warns us about possible faults caused by turning off the power outlet.
If you suffer blockages very often, it can be due to several causes: it could be overheating, in which case we recommend following the red light solution (PS4 located in a well ventilated area without obstructions). It could also be because you don’t have the updated console. Connect to the Internet and you should automatically receive the notice to download the latest firmware version. As a last solution, try entering safe mode and rebuild the database to eliminate any possible failures.
L2 Button Does Not Work
ERROR: The L2 button on DualShock 4 does not work properly or requires great pressure to do so.
SOLUTION: Among the first batches of PS4 that were put up for sale, some included DualShock 4 controls with a factory defect that makes it possible, although it is possible to press the L2 button normally, some games do not recognize it. An example of this is Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag (PS4 version), where pressing the button to the maximum does not cause Edward to run at maximum speed. The main solution is, unfortunately, to buy a new remote.
However, there is also a free and fully functional solution: in ‘Settings’> ‘Accessibility’> ‘Button assignment’ you can assign the function of L2 to any other button (L1, for example), and in this way, the system will recognize without a problem.
PSN Does Not Work
ERROR: It is not possible to log in, which prevents you from viewing the friend’s list, playing online or accessing the PlayStation Store. This Error is also called PS4 Not Working.
SOLUTION: In 90% of cases, this is because Sony is performing maintenance or PSN is down (error CE-33991-5). In both, the only solution is to arm yourself with patience and wait for everything to return to normal. There is also the possibility that it is because your PS4 is not properly connected to the Internet; Check your settings (Wi-Fi or Ethernet) and make sure everything works correctly.
